The first year of the International Festival and Choir Competition was held in 1999 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bohuslav Martinů's death. The year 2011, which takes part from 23.6.2011 to 26.6.2011 is devoted to the jubilee of the 120th composer's birthday.

Within years of existence of the Bohuslav Martinů Festival, about 200 excellent foreign and Czech choirs took part in this festival in all competing categories. The participants have also opportunities to perform in historical places and churches in Prague and in towns of Pardubice region.

The hosting town Pardubice, with a population of almost one hundred thousand people, has a reason to be proud (see Pardubice sightseeing).: Apart from chemical and electronic industries, Pardubice is also a university town with seven faculties for ten thousand students. You can also find here the Conservatory, the Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra and the theatre. Pardubice is also a very sporty town, with multi functional sport hall with a capacity of ten thousand spectators. Thanks to two world known composers, Bedřich Smetana from Litomyšl and Bohuslav Martinů from Polička, the Pardubice region has a renowned musical past..
